Justice League Unlimited

Next cartoon up for review is Justice League Unlimited. JLU is a direct sequel/continuation to the original Justice League show.

JLU takes place a few years after the series finale of Justice League. The League has since then expanded and has over 50 new members including the original 7. This shows episodes are in one part and are more isolated than in Justice League where episodes were in two parts.

It seems as if each original member has their own respective squad now. Each episode has a different 3-6 members fighting a new villain or saving people from natural disasters. There are some overarching story arcs but they take longer to develop and are at a much larger scale then in the original show. Justice League Unlimited also had the opportunity to add villains that served as counterparts to the new members.

One of the best things about the show was the addition of Captain Atom and Green Arrow. Green Arrow serves a similar role as Batman. Green Arrow and Batman are both human and see the potential for world domination in the heroes who have real powers and remain constantly weary and on edge of their teammates. Captain Atom, a former air force soldier is able to control and manipulate an infinite amount of nuclear energy. This doesn’t sound as good on paper (well on screen) but in the show its portrayed in a really cool way. He can theoretically absorb a nuclear explosion and then direct it toward anyone or anything he wants. In simple terms he can match up and stand a chance against Superman himself.

The best episodes are still the ones where its the original seven members. The last season contains an all out brawl between the League and Darkseid which is enough motivation to watch the show. The Legion of Doom makes another more powerful appearance having even more villains, not as many as the League but comparable.

What ultimately makes the show worthwhile is the teamwork display in Justice League carrying over to Unlimited. Whether its Green Arrow working with Batman or Black Canary working with The Flash this show has an immense amount of cool team-up combos as well as enough one liners to keep you laughing throughout. JLU is a wonderful addition to the DC Universe and should be seen as additional seasons to JL instead of an entirely new series.
